What happens to your plastic after you drop it at a collection point?

You separate your waste, carry it to the neighbourhood drop-point and feel good about it. But where does it actually go? Follow the journey of a single PET bottle through SVF’s recovery chain.

What happens to your plastic after you drop it at

You drop a plastic bottle into the blue bin at your neighbourhood collection point. The small act takes two seconds. What happens next takes weeks and involves dozens of hands, machines and decisions before that same bottle re-appears as a new one on a store shelf.

Step 1: Collection and transport

SVF’s collection network covers 186 communities across Hyderabad. Bins at each drop-point are collected on a fixed schedule — high-density areas daily, others twice a week.

Each collection vehicle is GPS-tracked. Route optimisation has reduced fuel use by 18% since 2024.

Arrival at the MRF is the most important checkpoint. Every load is weighed and logged before it enters the sorting line.

Step 2: Sorting

The Material Recovery Facility is where the real work happens. On arrival, bags are emptied onto a tipping floor. Workers — many from the informal recycling community — perform a first pass to remove obvious contamination: food waste, textiles, electronic scrap.

The remaining material passes through a multi-stage sort:

  • Magnetic separator pulls out ferrous metals
  • Eddy current separator removes aluminium
  • Optical sorters using near-infrared (NIR) sensors identify polymer types (PET, HDPE, PP, LDPE, PVC) and sort them with 98% accuracy
  • Manual QC station catches what machines miss

By the end of the sorting line, what you dropped as a single bottle has been separated into a monostream of clean PET flake — the raw material for new bottles.

Step 3: Processing

Clean sorted plastic is baled — compressed into 500 kg cubes wrapped in wire — and shipped to recycling partners.

At a recycling facility, the bales are:

  1. Shredded into small flakes
  2. Washed in multiple stages to remove labels, glue and residue
  3. Dried and melted
  4. Pelletised into food-grade resin

The entire process uses about 80% less energy than producing virgin PET from petroleum.

Step 4: Back to the shelf

Those pellets are sold to manufacturers who blow-mould them into new bottles. A recycled PET bottle can be back on a store shelf within 60 days of being dropped off — and the cycle can repeat 7–9 times before the polymer degrades beyond usability.

The bottle you recycle today could be holding water again next month.
